In high school I formed a band. In a few months we were playing gigs making spending money and being hunted down by older women.
There were good musicians in my small Texas town. The most notorious was a drummer named J.D.
J.D. was a cowboy drummer.
But- We needed a blusey drummer but I was not originally from Texas. so I found a drummer who 's roots were from the Islands...Russel. He was perfect. I strummed and he just jumped in.
He made us unique. Then there was Johnny who played bass and was a born salesman, he got us gigs. The first at the YWCA, then the Stork Club. One new years we played the Red Carpet on Hwy. 44 near Corpus. That was After Tony Joe left. POKE SALAD ANNIE was played in places like Chiaago for fifty years. It was a smash... he was on Johnny Cash Show. and many others. I didn't quite under stand how he did it. But, when I sat in front of him, I could not move. He was always a STAR. Still is.
Me, I could play 4 cords in any key, and was infected with the blues at the age of ten.
So driving near Memphis with my family as a boy is when this white boy got the blues. We where going to North Carolina. That's where grandpa bought my first guitar.
